Santería (Spanish, mostly translated as “Way of the Saints”)
is a syncretic, afro american main religion in Cuba,
their Orishas (gods of Santería) with Catholic saints
(Spanish santos) mixed.
Voodoo comes from Benin (Africa) and is the “cradle of voodoo”,
a 4000 years old ghost religion.
Voodoo is officially recognized as a religion in Benin,
with its own public holiday the 11th of January.
Many Catholics in Cuba
today turn away from the Christian Church
and seek advice and salvation from a Santera,
a Santero or a Babalao
these are practicing followers of Santería.

Santería is the Spanish collective term for the cults
of African origin in Cuba.
The supreme deity of Santería is Olodumare.
Olodumare is creator of, all the energy and creator of Orichas.
He is so far removed from humanity in his perfection and purity,
that he is not directly worshiped (similar to Bon Dieu from the Voodoo cult).
Orichas are spirit beings / deities, the different manifestations
from Oludumare.
The faithful turn to the Orichas in their rituals.
Depending on the source, up to 600 different Orichas are mentioned,
but in the Santería only about two dozen of them are worshiped.
Elegguá.
He is the master of the streets, crossroads and doors.
His emblematic colors are red and black,
his plants u. a. Basil and nettles.
His favorite dishes include smoked fish, yams roots and sugar cane.
He also likes to drink aguardiente, d. H. Spirits.
At will he gives us peace or war, luck or misfortune.
His nature can therefore be described as ambivalent.
Its main functions are the communication of people’s messages
to the Orichas and the Almighty.
He must be the first to be welcomed in all rituals
and also the first to receive his sacrifices.
This special position is given to him because you do not want to upset him.
Because without Elegguás consent nothing can and will happen.
Every Santero has a personal Elegguá figure.
He is syncretized in the Santería mostly with Anthony of Padua.
He has 21 caminos (Spanish: way, means: different aspects / manifestations,
in which he can show himself).
